Home Generators
If you are going to use home generators, then there are some basic things you need to think about. For starters, why do you want a home generator? What do you hope to do with it? How will you use it? How often will you use it? What are you going to be using it for? If it’s reserved only for emergencies and then only to run a few items, like a furnace and fridge, then you can probably get away with using a smaller generator. If, however, you have a large home, you have a lot of items to power, or you have to reason to believe you will be using a generator often—like because of the weather patterns where you live or how isolated your home is—then you’re going to want to look into getting a larger home generator. The size really depends on the amount of wattage you need, which relies directly on what you plan to power.
If you do install a home generator, one thing that you will absolutely need to install is a power transfer switch. This is a switch that hooks directly into the power circuits that you want to control. This is the only safe way to switch your powers electrical load over to the generator. Otherwise, you run the very real risk of electrocution and electrical fire. You can either install the power transfer yourself, or you can have a professional do it. If you don’t have an experience with electrical circuits and elements, then you should probably have a professional install it for use with your home generator.
